Mad About the Boy - BBC Radio 4

Mad About the Boy is a programme for BBC Radio 4 presented by Jude Rogers and Ruth Barnes, produced by Falling Tree Productions. The thesis was this: obsessive teen girl fan culture is given a bad rap in the press and in society as a whole, going back generations. We look at the flip side, we celebrate it and conclude that it's a vital rite of passage for young women as they reach puberty. With contributions from author and David Cassidy fan Allison Pearson, One Direction songwriter Fiona Bevan, One Direction fans, E17's Tony Mortimer and Jude's mother-in-law and Beatlemaniac Lillian Adams.

Jessica Pratt in session

As usual Simon Raymonde has chosen another blinder of a session for his show this week. San Francisco's Jessica Pratt popped in and played some simple acoustic tracks. She's a new favourite of The Other Woman and we shall be playing these on the show over the next few weeks!

Johanna Glaza in session

Johanna Glaza
Prepare for something rather stunning. Remember Joana and the Wolf? Well they’ve been rather quiet for the past few years and that’s because their front woman Johanna Glaza has become, well, Johanna Glaza. The Lithuanian turned Londoner has struck out on her own via a stint of writing and playing in New York. The result is the stunning Shall I Be A Saint E.P. and here she is performing Mama and the title tracks in session on The Other Woman.

Sumie in session for Simon Raymonde

Sumie
Here's an Amazing Radio session I just had to post. Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins/ Bella Union Label boss) had the very beautiful Sumie in session recently and here it is for your listening pleasure. You know Yukimi from Little Dragon? This is her sister - talent runs in the family then!

De'Borah in session

De'Borah is a young singer songwriter from Croydon, via Brighton and The Brit School. Softly spoken and completely unassuming, when she starts singing her voice is spell binding. She's connected to the musical hotbed that is Fiona Bevan and Emily and the Woods et al, so she's in good hands. Also don't underestimate training at The Brit School, that's gotta toughen you up! The Waiting Games EP is out now and here she is in session for The Other Woman on Amazing Radio:

Best songs of 2013

Nadine Shah

To listen again click here for show's from 21 and 28 December.

What a task! Sifting through all the new music that’s come into The Other Woman's inbox in 2013 and somehow getting it down to two hour long shows. Insane! It’s been another fantastic year and there are some real gems including New York resident psych-rock-folkee Wilsen, London DIY punk funk merchant Ebony Bones, Bella Union‘s Landshapes and the jaw dropping piano playing Geordie Nadine Shah.

To hear the rest you’ll have to tune in but there's also some Americana, folk, DIY London punk and a gorgeous instrumental, amongst much more. Happy Christmas to you and don’t eat too many mince pies! Stuff that actually, eat as many as you like – it’s Chrrrriiiistmas!

This week on The Other Woman

A brand new track from Lanterns On The Lake starts us off this week. Their second album Until The Colours Run is out now and has been knocking our socks off. The newly renamed (and signed to Sub Pop) Lyla Foy makes an appearance ahead of her London show on the 10th, which is definitely in The Other Woman’s diary! There’s a trip to Batley just outside of Leeds to hear from up and coming blues-folk artist Jasmine Kennedy, an experimental soundscape from Atom Eye (which received a great reaction from you) plus an introduction to hip hop artist Lizzo and much, much more.

All available to listen again to right here.
