Seaming
has a massive voice. In fact the British-Chinese singer is operatically
trained and boy can she play piano. This track Sodaslow (sipped) is soaring, otherworldly and frankly
fantastic, she’s playing some shows live soon with her Mum, that’s how
she rolls. At 1'22" it's goosebump central.
Rebecca Jade is a Welsh guitarist and songwriter living in London and, lucky for you, she's just released her debut album The Distaff Muse. This video was made by shouting out to followers on Twitter who were each featured alongside one line of the song. It's charming, DIY and completely suits the slightly shambolic off-kilter vibe of the track. This ain't no straight forward indie rock record neither, Rebecca has teamed up with saxophone, organ, piano, flute... it's all a bit psychedelic and we love it.
A mutual love of rock 'n roll and the films of Russ Meyer bonded Roxie and George when they met at University and The Systematics were born. It Hurts is a joyful blend of moody guitar riffs and a rocking shalala chorus, and another fantastic DIY video. Both this track and the B side Beat Up My Brow are available to download for free here.
Musician Adam 'Finglebone' Varney often sends tips our way and when he does they're always a winner. Take Mevrouw Tamara for example, guitar picking Amsterdam native who makes beautiful simple folk music singing her in home tongue. The Guardian got in touch after she was featured on The Other Woman and made this fantastic video about her as part of their Sounds of Europe series. It tells you all you need to know really...
Enter the weird and wonderful sci-fi world of Los Angeles band Icons of Andria. They are a recording project from
Rodney Sellars of The Year Zero and Ken Negrete & Fabiola Sanchez of
Familiar Trees. Each track is uploaded the Soundcloud, with corresponding original artwork which gets 'coloured' when the track receives over 1000 plays. Read the story here. It's wonderful dreamy, futuristic psych-pop - a very happy discovery!
We
kicked off this week’s show with a brand new track from one
of our favourite’s The Horn The Hunt from Leeds are an electronic rock
duo whose album Depressur Jolie didn’t leave our ipod for many a month.
They’re back with a new single Gold and it’s GREAT.
We
feature Smoke Fairies in conversation - Kaff and Jess meet me on a hot,
sticky day in west London to talk about Blood Speaks their new album
and what will happen when they eventually ‘go metal’...
We’ve
also got a new single from New Orleans street buskers Hurray for the Riff Raff, frontwoman Alynda Lee Segara has dedicated their new album to
her father, a Vietnam vet and he’s pictured on the cover of the album -
goosebumps aplenty!
Sarah Negahdari is the guitar-toting frontwoman of LA psych-rockers Happy Hollows who themselves have a new album on the horizon but more on that later. This is her side project, more whimsical folk and psychedelic than what she does with HH, Pisces is what you'd get if you stripped back the noise and chaos of HH with Sarah's voice fore-fronted. Beautiful stuff.
This Toronto band have just released this single and video, they're first, and an extremely promising sign of things to come. The debut album Never Goes Away will be coming soon from Adm and Hunter, Hunter is who you hear on vocals and she's who messaged TOW on Facebook asking for us to share the love. Happily. There's a quality to Hunter's voice that's timeless, miles apart from the reverb drenched lo-fi vocals currently en vogue. Change is confident, cool and cut through with beautiful, glitchy instrumentation.
