Amazing Radio listen again with Ana Silvera

This week the glorious-voiced magical realist songstress Ana Silvera joins us for a chat about what it is that makes her tick. Writing classically inflected piano based music doesn’t make for the hit parade, but she’s had plenty of attention from the papers and the fanbase is growing.

We kick off the show with Brooklyn based artist Natureboy, Sara is of Iranian descent and writes beautifully moody abstract songs. Sharon Van Etten is a fan and has sung with her recently on tour, now there’s a show we’d like to be at.

Latest listening: Seaming and Natureboy

Seaming

Seaming has a massive voice. In fact the British-Chinese singer is operatically trained and boy can she play piano. This track Sodaslow (sipped) is soaring, otherworldly and frankly fantastic, she’s playing some shows live soon with her Mum, that’s how she rolls. At 1'22" it's goosebump central.

Amazing Radio listen again with Peggy Sue

Peggy Sue
On the show this week, the super talented Peggy Sue drop by for a chinwag about their new project which is playing a live soundtrack score to cult classic Scorpio Rising. They’re also working on the new album (no.3!) and say they’re feeling a little cheerier then in the past, expect the girls to have some fun again.

Amazing Radio listen again with Rachael Dadd

On the show this week we’re thrilled to welcome Rachael Dadd, folk musician based in Bristol and Japan. Rachael is married to a Japanese musician called Ichi who is always a part of her live shows and is a wonder to watch. Together they make beautiful music and Rachael’s solo work is jaw-dropping. She plays piano, guitar, banjo, ukulele and her songs are woven out of stories of love, everyday life and Japanese sushi recipes…

Label spotlight: Fettkakao

Andi Dvorak runs Viennese label Fettkakao which is an absolute gold mine of interesting leftfield music from Austria.

Plaided
First discovery is Plaided, a duo Veronika and Julia whose first album Playdate is just out. The pair got to know each other through organising Ladyfest Vienna in 2005, they say that all the motivated people in that DIY community inspired them to start a band of their own. Absolutely summing up the spirit of Ladyfest!

The resulting debut album is an absolute joy. Singing mostly in harmony creating a quirky choral effect, then diving in with grungey indie guitar and drums. TOW cannot wait to see this band live.

The band have already played London's Lexington this year and will support the excellent Grass Widow in September... we'll be there!

Listen to the whole album here:

Other notable releases include Just Friends and Lovers (Vero, Lina, Lena from Graz in Southern Austria) and Stefanie Sourial, part of the Club Burlesque Brutal, a queer burlesque show, in Vienna.
